Who We Are
We’re a bunch of friends who love getting together to taste and learn about great wine, and we’re excited to use the Internet to share our passion with all of you. Wine Tasting Uncorked is not a business; we’re not formally affiliated with the wine industry in any way. We’re not here to sell you anything or to direct traffic or business to anyone in the wine industry. (Note – the picture above is not actually us, but they look cool and if we ever meet them we’ll open a bottle of the good stuff!)
The vision of Wine Tasting Uncorked is to inspire you with ideas for hosting your next wine tasting event for your friends. This website is dedicated to everyone who is thinking of planning a wine tasting party – from the first-time host to the seasoned wine club leader. We have a passion for hosting wine tasting parties, years of experience throwing great events, and we want to share some of our ideas with you. We’ll give you the inspiration for a theme, recommend some specific wines to include, and provide all the tools & ideas you’ll need to host a fantastic event.
We started a wine tasting group called NYC Uncorked a few years ago in New York City. The inspiration for the group – and for this website – was a similar club that several of us helped organize from 2004-2006 in northern California. We would hold tasting events where groups as small as 8-10 people or as large as 40-50 would come together to enjoy tasting six to eight wines organized along a particular theme. The atmosphere was fun & relaxed – a cocktail party atmosphere, not a classroom exercise – but in the process we started to learn more and more about the world of wine. And the more we explored the world of wine, the more we found there to discover.
Perhaps more importantly, though, we all found wine tasting parties to be the perfect forum for gathering regularly with our close friends. As Robert Mondavi so eloquently put it, wine is ultimately about “family and friends…warmth of heart and generosity of spirit.”
It’s fascinating and great fun to explore the unique flavors of a wine you’ve never tried, to find the perfect wine to pair with a specific meal, to discover your new favorite splurge wine for a special occasion, to find the $10 wine that tastes great but won’t break the bank… If you’re an epicurean at heart – if you love enjoying great foods, discovering new combinations of flavors, and sharing those experiences with friends & loved ones – you’ll no doubt find that wine fits right into that passion!
And also, wine is a great way to unleash your inner world traveler. To explore the world of wine is to travel from California to France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Argentina, Chile… Just when you think you’ve figured it out you find a great new wine from the Greek Islands, Austria, Portugal, Oregon, Virginia… The wines of all these places evoke their culture, history, and cuisine. It’s little wonder that books like A Year in Provence and Under the Tuscan Sun have become bestsellers – the allure of discovering another part of the world with a culture, beauty and food & wine lifestyle all its own is irresistible.
One thing we’ve found over the years is that even people who love wine and who have been to numerous wine tasting parties still feel nervous about hosting one themselves. There’s an art to hosting a great wine tasting party, and a lot of it has to do with the theme: the selection of the specific wines that will work together to create a fantastic event. And it’s little wonder why this can seem so daunting; after all, there are so many wines out there, dozens of different regions & grapes, thousands of producers… How to choose?
Interestingly, despite all the wealth of information on the Internet, few sites actually specialize in providing ideas for the theme of your wine tasting party. You’ll find plenty of resources that tell you what kind of glasses to use, how many different wines to serve, how many people to invite, what temperature to serve the wine, but few that give specific ideas for the theme itself (beyond general encouragement to focus on a specific varietal or region). That still leaves a lot of research, planning & creativity for the first-time host!
That’s where we come in. This website is designed to provide you with dozens of ideas for your next wine tasting party. And we’ll keep updating the site with new ideas and recent tasting notes.
